The Commonwealth
Namibia, a member of the Commonwealth since 1990, plays an active role in the organization by participating in various initiatives to promote democracy, good governance, and sustainable development. The country contributes to Commonwealth discussions and actions on issues like climate change, education, and economic growth, reflecting its commitment to the shared values of the association. In return, the Commonwealth supports Namibia through programmes and technical assistance that enhance its socio-economic development, strengthen its democratic institutions, and address challenges such as youth unemployment and public health. This mutual engagement helps Namibia benefit from shared expertise and resources, while also allowing it to influence the direction and policies of the Commonwealth. Below we have a few projects that Namibia is currently engaged in tackling through the assistance of the Commonwealth.
Sustainable Development of Mineral Resources
The Commonwealth Secretariat collaborates with the Namibian government to sustainably develop the country's rich mineral resources, including petroleum, uranium, and diamonds. This partnership enhances regulatory frameworks and governance structures to promote transparency, accountability, and environmental sustainability. The Secretariat provides technical assistance, policy advice, and capacity-building initiatives to help Namibia manage its resources effectively and attract responsible foreign investment. These efforts aim to maximise the economic benefits of Namibia's mineral wealth while ensuring environmental and social sustainability, contributing to the broader goals of national development.
Governance and Public Procurement Reforms
Namibia performs well in corruption indexes, but the Commonwealth Secretariat is assisting the country in further improving the transparency and efficiency of how public organizations award contracts and procure goods. This collaboration involves refining procurement policies and procedures to ensure fairness, competitiveness, and accountability. The Secretariat provides technical support and training to Namibian officials, helping them adopt best practices in public procurement. These efforts aim to reduce corruption risks, enhance public trust, and ensure that public resources are used effectively and responsibly.
Youth Entrepreneurship and Job Creation
The Commonwealth Secretariat supports youth entrepreneurship in Namibia by providing start-up funding to the Namibia Youth Credit Scheme. This initiative helps young entrepreneurs launch and grow their businesses, fostering innovation and economic growth. The Scheme not only creates job opportunities but also empowers youth by equipping them with the skills and resources needed for successful business ventures. Through this support, the Secretariat contributes to reducing youth unemployment and promoting sustainable development in Namibia.
The Blue Charter and Marine Plastic Pollution
Namibia is an active member of the Commonwealth Clean Ocean Alliance, part of the Blue Charter Action Group dedicated to tackling marine plastic pollution. Through this alliance, Namibia collaborates with other member countries to develop and implement strategies aimed at reducing plastic waste in oceans. The Commonwealth Secretariat supports these efforts by providing technical assistance, facilitating knowledge exchange, and promoting best practices. This partnership helps Namibia protect its marine ecosystems, ensuring the health and sustainability of its coastal environments for future generations.
Promoting Gender Equality
The Commonwealth Secretariat is assisting the Namibian government in developing budgetary strategies that support gender equality. This collaboration focuses on integrating gender-responsive budgeting practices to ensure that financial resources are allocated in ways that address the needs and priorities of all genders. The Secretariat provides expertise and training to Namibian officials on how to analyze budget impacts on gender equality and design policies that promote inclusivity. These efforts aim to create a more equitable society by ensuring that government spending advances the economic and social well-being of women and men alike.
